Have you ever wondered what goes into making soy candles? Is there really any difference from one soy candle company to another soy candle company?
Soy Candles add beautiful elegance, fragrance and most importantly they do not harm the air you are breathing. Soy candles are becoming increasingly popular across the nation. Soy candles are being found in every room within a house - people are decorating with soy candles in the bedroom, bathroom, family rooms, living rooms, study and kitchens. You can find soy candles in just about every room!
Before soy candles came along, decorating with candles was still very popular, except paraffin candles were being burned in just about every room you can imagine. People were not aware of the dangers of paraffin candles and what paraffin candles were bringing into their homes. Paraffin candles release toxins such as: formaldehyde, acrolein, benzene and acetaldehyde. Did you know that according to the E.PA., paraffin wax has 11 known toxins and 2 are above the excess cancer risk with multiple use. That is pretty scary. Paraffin wax is a petroleum by-product and thank GOD soy candles are replacing paraffin candles all over the United States and abroad. Soy candles are healthier for you and the environment!
If you’re a candle lover, you’ve probably burned paraffin candles and noticed the effects of paraffin or petrochemical based candles in your home. When you light a paraffin candle you may notice that there is black smoke that emits from the wick. It stains the jar or candle holder and, after burning a paraffin candle for long periods of time a paraffin candle can even stain your walls, air vents, ceiling and other areas of your home. If you sit too close to burning paraffin candles, you may even notice a bit of soot accumulating on your skin or clothes, or in particle-collecting areas of your body such as your nostrils. You may experience headaches and even nausea when burning paraffin candles. And if you think that’s bad, just think of how it must look in your lungs. Consumers are taking charge of their health by burning soy candles instead.
Many of us know about the traditional benefits of soy wax: soy candles burn clean, last longer and burn soot free. Soy candles burn so cleanly and safely because soy wax has a lower melting point than the paraffin wax that is used in traditional candles. This means that soy candles burn cooler, as well as up to 50% longer. Cooler burning means a longer burn time, which means more bang for your buck.
Now, it is true that soy candles burn clean, last longer, and are soot free but what else is going into the soy candles you are burning ? Do all soy candles smell incredible? Remember all soy candles are not created equal, you must know about the company's manufacturing process, and ingredients used. Just because you are burning a "soy candle" does not mean they are going to smell incredible and are the healthiest choice for you.
Other Soy candles are a combination of Soy Wax and Paraffin Wax. It is much easier to work with paraffin wax when making candles. Paraffin is very rigid. Soy wax is very soft, making it difficult to work with.
To make a great burning and smelling soy candle using 100% soy wax is very time consuming and takes specific methods to get the candle to burn evenly and effectively transfer the scent form the candles into the air! I don't agree with manufacturers using paraffin wax along with soy wax, but I understand why. Manufacturing a candle is so much easier using paraffin wax. Please understand paraffin wax is harmful when burned and, be aware that a lot of soy candles are not 100% soy wax candles.
Synthetic Additives - This one of course you have no control over. Unfortunately, the use of some essential oils,(not all essential oils are safe to be used in candles), synthetic scents, and other additives that most other candle manufacturers employ, result in candles that generate a lot of soot and toxins. Things like UV inhibitors, chemicals to make candles look creamier, more rigid, etc. The list goes on and on. All these chemicals add to the toxicity and the soot production of candles. Independent tests have demonstrated that some candles generate 100 times the quantity of soot produced by other candles.
Petroleum-based fragrances - The majority of candles on the market use fragrances manufactured in petroleum oil, which is toxic and takes away from the purity and potency of the scent. Soy candle fragrances are pretty new to the candle market. We were one of the first to use them. Soy candle fragrances are healthier, being made in a carrier of soy bean oil and smell fantastic!
